I have asthma and am automatically offered the flu jab every year. When I was pregnant, I was still offered it. I checked that it was safe for me to take and I was told that it is completely safe to have the jab when you're pregnant as long as you are not suffering from a cold or fever on the day you have the jab.

Still have the jab, but mention that you're pregnant to the nurse who will probably just check that you aren't under the weather in any way.

It is safe to have the flu jab while you are pregnant , if it is after the first trimester. There are also studies that suggest in having a flu jab while pregnant can protect the baby from developing leukaemia in later life, and that contracting flu while pregnant doubles the childs risks. Its also suggested that pregnant women who have the flu jab cut the risks of dying during childbirth.

I got the flu shot with three of my pregnancies. With my first pregnancy I did not, and I ended up getting the flu and I was miserable.......I couldn't take anything for it, and it was just awful. No one likes to get a shot, but then again, you do not want to run the risk of getting the flu and having complications from it when you are pregnant. I was probably lucky I didn't end up in the hospital. Talk to your midwife about any concerns, but I would go for the shot.

The responses on here are very interesting as our surgery will not give the flu jab if you are pregnant.

I have a flu jab annually as an asthma sufferer but when I was pregnant, they wouldn't give it to me. When I went for my jab this year, they asked if I was pg. I asked if they would give it if I was, and they said no.

Worth checking with your midwife to be on the safe side.

That is wise to check with your midwife first. However, my daughter is pregnant, due in April, and she received a flu shot as did my niece who just delivered her baby girl on Nov. 14. She received her flu shot when she was pregnant.

Its safe but my doctor told me it takes 4 weeks for the shot to take effect. That mean you have 4 weeks from the time you get the shot to actually get the flu. We are already over a month into flu season. Its up to you. I decided not to get one.

Ours here at work is offered free. I found out a week before we were supposed to get the shots. I asked my doctor about it and he told me to do it! He said if I wouldn't have gotten it though work, he would have told me to go get one anyway because us pregnant women are in the "high risk" group.

Good luck & congratulations!

I work in a GP surgery & I'm 39 weeks pregnant. It is not advisable to have flu jab if you are in first trimester & is advisable if you are in 2nd & 3rd trimester.
