whats costly to some is worth it to others. Depends on how financially fixed you are. If going on a trip is going to be the difference of wether or not the bills get paid, then dont go. But on the other hand travelling is a wonderful way of experiencing new things and its very educational. Sometimes its just a matter of getting your priorities straight

You asking two questions here.

Should you be saving for the future? yes of course.
But that does not mean at the expense of travelling.

Travel a waste of money? Not at all. There is a saying "Travel broadens your mind" People are willing to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars in higher education - not that there is anything wrong with that. But you can also spend some money travelling and get a lot of education about culture, people and about life that is not in any of the text books. For example, You can look at the photos of the pyramids all you want - but to spend some money and get to stand at the base of the great pyramids in the heat of Egypt with the wind blowing in your face will be worth every cent you have invested.
And "cheap" is only relative. Really , these days, the competition in tourism industry is fierce and you can get a lot of great deals. There are also different times of the year when certain places are easier or cheaper to travel to. Look around.

By not travelling - you may be missing out on meeting some very fascinating people from some of the most amazing places in the world.

Hope my contribution to your question helps

What is it in the future that you would be saving for? I personally find travel to be a great way of seeing the world. Having new life experiences that you never could otherwise. I've been on two road trips around the US and to Cancun, none of them were cheap but they were all worth it. If there is something specific that you need to save for, ie. a house, a car, college, etc. then you just have to decide which is more important to you. Also, you can find a lot of really great deals on the internet for trips depending on where you go. I found one for $1000 for 2 nights in paris, 2 nights in london and 2 nights in amsterdam, planes, shuttles, trains, hotels all included...you just have to search around.
I say TRAVEL!

Saving for your future is important of course, but travel is one of the best experiences you can ever have. You will learn things you could never learn otherwise. Personally I think the best way to travel is the cheap way. Go camping, youth hostels, cheaper countries. You will learn more than at a resort and save money. Travel is where all my spare money goes.
