Wow. Not one of these answers gives you a *general* way to approach this kind of problem (which is really what you asked for ... not just the answer, and not "that's easy" ... shortcuts are great, but you're asking for a *general* help with this kind of problem).

I've tutored kids and *adults* who panic when they see these problems, and so here are my tips to help.

All word problems involve a basic 3-step process:

1. Translate the words into math symbols.
2. Do the math (play with the symbols using rules).
3. Translate the math symbols back into words.

If you panic when you see word problems, it's probably because you're trying to do Step 1 and 2 at the same time. Stop ... translate the problem into symbols ... and *then* start doing the math.

Why is this so important? Because Step 1 requires some creativity ... where you're doing the hard part that varies from question to question ... that's where there are all sorts of bizarre distractions in the wording (maybe it's "Po" and "Jezebel" next time, maybe one's a lifeguard and the other a hairdresser ... this is where the question can throw all sorts of irrelevant crap at you ... you need to get rid of everything that is irrelevant (like the names of the girls).

Second, the actual math step (Step 2) involves repetition ... rewriting the same statements in different ways ... so if it's long words, this gets tedious. So Step 1 is writing the sentences down using as few symbols as possible.

Step 2 requires almost no creativity at all. That's just applying rules to symbols ... like "subtract 4 from both sides" or "divide both sides by 2", that kind of thing.

And Step 3 is simple, IF you remember what your symbols mean.

In this case:
1. Translate the words into symbols:
"The sum of Cora's age and Rose' age is 40."
C + R = 40
"Cora is 4 years older than Rose."
C = R + 4

2. Manipulate the symbols.
C + R = 40 ... and
C = R + 4
so (rule: rewrite first eq. using definition of C from the second eq.)
(R + 4) + R = 40
so (rule: we can reorder things added together)
R + R + 4 = 40
so (rule: subtract 4 from both sides)
R + R = 36
so (rule: replace additions with equivalent multiplication)
R * 2 = 36
so (rule: divide both sides by 2)
R = 18
so (rule: substitute back into original equation 2)
C = R + 4 = 18 + 4 = 22

3. Translate the symbols back into words:
R = 18 ... "Rose is 18 years old."
C = 22 ... "Cora is 22 years old."

I hope that helps. Feel free to email if questions.

permit Rose's age be x And Cora's age be x+4 for that reason X+x+4=40 2X+4=40 2X=40-4 2X=36 X=36/2 X=18 i.e Rose's age for this reason Cora is X+4=18+4=22. Cora's 22 years previous examine 18+22=40

Cora is 22. Rose is 18. 22+18=20. 22-18=4

Let R represent Rose's age
Let R+4 represent Cora's age since Cora is Rose's age plus 4
So R+R+4=40
So R+R=36
So R=18
so R+4 = 22
So Rose is 18 and Cora is 22

this is primary school mathematics, a twelve year old will be able to answer you

the difference between cora's and rose's age is four years, by taking away the difference, they will be the same age

40-4= 36

since they are now the same age in your calculation, divide their ages by two ( 36 is their total age )

36/2= 18

you know that cora is 4 years older in reality, add the four years to her age.

18+4= 22

VOILA! cora is 22 years old

Ok the easiest way I can figure to show you is take 40 and divide it by 2. Then you get 20. Well If one is older then the other just add 4 to Coras age and subtract 4 from Roses age.

assume cora's age is x and Rose's age is y,
Then,
x+y =40 -(1)
x -y =04 -(2)

(1)+(2) gives, 2x =44
x =22
y =x -4
=22 -4
=18.
