To clarify my previous question, "If God doesn't exist, then who created the first atom?" I would like to add this. First of all, I do believe that He exists. In answer to one of the answers received, God has no begining and no end so therefore He has no creator. Using the atom as an example may have been wrong on my part. If you can imagine the very first particle, whether it be a component of the atom, a beam of light or even a void, someone or something had to create it. It's impossible for something to create itself out of nothing. Therefore, there has to be a superior being.

This question arises again and again, and I personally can see why it is in the physics forum, as it draws the analogy to particles, atoms and the origin of the universe. To draw another connecting thread to physics, the Big Bang theory of the beginning of the universe is challenged by the Steady-State theory, that posits that there was no "first event" and the universe exists in a steady state for all time. There is a lot of physical evidence against the steady state, but that also assumes that the universe is homogeneous throughout, and this particular aspect cannot be proven with our limited powers of observation. The evidence points to a first event, but the possibility is still open that this is but a local illusory phenomenon based on the apparent but not actual homogeneity of space in our local area.

Personally I think the problem of "what came first, the chicken or the egg?" is insoluble and relies on an infinite regression of time as we understand it currently. I am waiting for the theory that does away with time altogether, as I think it will simplify many things.

The question you ask about who created the first something out of nothing always begs the question, "who created the creator?" And this is what I mean by the endless regression of time and "what came first?" I think it must be a sort of logical loop created by our understanding of the concept of time and our belief in the finite nature of the universe. Perhaps someone living in a different area of space, where everything is in flux and homogeneity is a fool's dream would have very different cosmological and philosophical theories.

Addendum: to address the answerer a few below me who treats the search for God as a scientific problem, I think your metaphor is a little misplaced, as it posits a correlation to biology and the assumption that God is a species, rather than a singularity, which is what most people would start with as a first assumption. When one tries to detect evidence for a phenomenon that is not directly observable, one looks at effects on observable objects and beings that can be quantified, such as the supporting evidence for an expanding universe determined by red-shifted galaxies and the like. It would be interesting to see the search for God set up as a problem in science, but I think it should, if it were to be approached from a monotheistic perspective, be treated in terms of the singularity, unless you wish to determine whether the Greek and Roman Gods existed or if you wish to prove the existence of many gods, rather than just one. A good twist, though!

Yes, God does exist. Had there been no supreme power which we commonly call God then how is it possible for a life to come into being just by an egg and a sperm. Something very powerful has created all the processes of life. Adam and eve came from where? who created the first plant, the first animal, who created the air and the mighty sea??? Who created the earth and other planets? No human power can create this universe. none of us have seen God but we feel him every time a life is born, every time a death occurs, every time the wind blows, every time a flower blooms, in every minute in every second. just close ur eyes and u will feel him right now somewhere inside u!

Since you asked this in the Science and Mathematics forum, lets treat it like a science problem.

To prove existance, you will need direct measurable proof of existance or a lot of indirect (yet still measureable) evidence.

Ok, lets start with the direct evidence

(1). Have you captured a specimen or carcas of a specimen? If so, then what were the characteristics of the god? Please, we will need measurements, weight, general description and so forth.

(2). Have you recovered blood, hair, saliva, or other biological samples that might contain DNA? Have you recovered god scat?

Ok, failing that, we can go to indirect (but measurable) evidence. Note, indirect evidence by itself is usually not proof.

(1) Have you discovered footprints? Have you made casts? Have these been analyzed by experts?

(2). Do you have photographic or video evidence of god? If so, has it been analyzed by experts to verify it?

Ok, the only evidence that you have is a book. A single book. A single book that contradicts itself many times. A single book that contradicts itself many times and also has erronious passages regarding science. A single book that contradicts itself many times and also has erronious passages regarding science that was written by man and not by a god. Not too great of evidence here. In reality you have no evidence of god.

Science does not have all the answers. Neither does the bible. It does not answer the question of what made god. You yourself said "It's impossible for something to create itself out of nothing."

Next time, ask this question in the Religion and Spirituality forum. That is where it belongs.

God is whatever you perceive that Power to be l guess
If you ask a Christian their God is different to a person from
Islam or Buddhism which has several Gods
As for being a person as you or l , l do not think so
Gods have been around since the beginning of time from Ra right thru to the new age of Christians
Whatever or who ever you follow we as people do not have the right to enforce any of our beliefs on any other culture or another religion
All depends on what side of the fence you are on
Doesn't it.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Proposing that nothing existed, and then everything suddenly existed having been birthed out of a giant explosion, is ludicrous.
God exists - and as the Creator, exists OUTSIDE of everything He created, including time.
Seems to me that if one doesn't believe He exists, then one would have very little value, no purpose, and a relatively short future.

God is the superior being and has just always been!!!! nothing before him. just because something is hard to conceive doesn't mean it cannot happen......imagine 200 years ago do you think people thought about driving around in cars talking on the phone with anyone in the entire world??? some things aren't meant for us to understand....that is why we are to live by faith not by sight!!!!

that is an age previous question that we may or may by no potential recognize even after lack of existence we may by no potential recognize. in accordance to technology, and Athiests, He does not exist. in accordance to religious sorts and individuals with faith, He does exist. in accordance to Agnostics, He may or may not exist. yet now decrease back to the starting up, if He does exist, perhaps sometime he will instruct himself or enable Himself common to the individuals, or contained in the Afterlife, because the Doctrine states, if you're solid then you will be allowed in Heaven even as God lives. besides the undeniable fact that it is also conceivable that there may not be an Afterlife yet He nonetheless does exist for us to by no potential recognize in any respect. Then there is also the concept that He does lower than no circumstances exist nor does Heaven exist, that is the Athiest idea of what God is. For myself in my opinion, i don't believe of i count number on Heaven, as a lot as i might want to really favor to, there is purely not something in my recommendations which will enable me trust that Heaven exists and there are Angels with white gowns and peace for all of something else of your submit existence in the international time. besides the undeniable fact that, I do trust there's a God, not the God it really is in pictures with the white gown, lengthy beard, halo, and each and every thing else, yet some kind of larger entity that we do not learn about and may by no potential learn about, yet i trust there must be something accessible it really is extra helpful than something else, some entity that really in all different words is...God.

not sure why this is in the "physics" forum, but I think you're asking a basic "what came first, the chicken or the egg". Those that are die-hard science, non-religious types (myself being one of them), can explain everything in the universe's history up until the Big Bang. It kind of gets fuzzy when asked where did that super-condense bit of matter come from...
