The whole story is, my small family has pretty much doubled in the last year. My parents, brother and I have always probably gone way overboard for Christmas, but now my brother has a small daughter and is dating a girl with three daughters, so there are five more people to buy for. I can't afford to do it as I always have and I'm sure money is tight for the rest of my family as well. So, I was trying to think of good ideas to still exchange gifts but not go so crazy at it. I need ideas!
I was thinking about still buying for the kids but for the adults suggesting a Secret Santa type exchange. Could anyone share the rules of that with me? I'd like to bring it up and organise it on Thanksgiving if possible so I need the info fast! Also, my bro's girlfriend's oldest is 14...should she be a "kid" or "adult"? The other girls are all under 8 but I'm wondering if the 14 yr old would like a more adult type gift. So any info on how a successful Secret Santa works or other gift exchange ideas?

My cousin has a large family and they pick names out of a hat for the adults because it does get quite expensive. I've been involved with Secret Santa at workplaces and the rules are pretty much the same: agree on a price range and put the names of the adults in a container and have each person pick a name.

As for the 14-year-old, that's a hard age to be. Not a child but not quite an adult. How about a trendy watch or other type of jewellry or a makeup kit (if she's allowed to wear makeup). There are also some nice gift sets that have cologne or even face washes and such that would be ideal for teenage girls. Or you could design your own with some shampoos, conditioners and such (kind of a spa in a bag idea).

Ok, so from my experience, for the 14 yr old, I would probably get her a gift card, maybe to a mall or her favorite store. Consider her a kid, but give her the freedom to later figure out what she wants. And I totally agree with your big family issues. They apply with me too. Just do a Secret Santa with the adults. Hope I helped!!!

Hey, sup. Well, what my family does is.... we write all of our names in a hat. Then each person picks out one name, and must go buy something for the person on their slip of paper. You do this at a birthday party or something near Christmas. Once you buy something, you are good. Then once the Christmas party comes, you stack the gifts somewhere(wrapped.) Then when it comes time, you hand out the gifts with the designated name on them. That is Secret Santa, although my family adds something else on called the Yankee Trade, where we trade our gifts if we want to. Try this.

You all should just do a grab bag ((((You get everyone's name and out it into a hat and everyone pulls a name))... So you can get the person you pick something REALLY nice!!
