Sir Jimmy Saville.

The first show

Top of the Pops began on New Year's Day 1964 in a studio (converted from a former church) on Dickenson Road in Longsight, Manchester, which the BBC had bought from Mancunian Films in 1954. DJ Jimmy Savile presented the first show, which featured (in order) The Rolling Stones with "I Wanna Be Your Man", Dusty Springfield with "I Only Want to be With You", the Dave Clark Five with "Glad All Over", The Hollies with "Stay", The Swinging Blue Jeans with "The Hippy Hippy Shake" and The Beatles with "I Want to Hold Your Hand", that week's number one. For the first three years Savile rotated with three other presenters: Alan Freeman, Pete Murray and David Jacobs.

Final show

On 20 June 2006, the show was formally cancelled and it was announced that the last edition would be broadcast on 30 July 2006. Edith Bowman co-presented its hour-long swansong, along with Sir Jimmy Savile (who had presented the first show), Reggie Yates, Mike Read, Pat Sharp, Sarah Cawood, Dave Lee Travis, Rufus Hound, Tony Blackburn and Janice Long. The show was recorded on 26 July 2006 and featured archive footage and tributes, including The Rolling Stones - the very first band to appear on Top of the Pops - opening with The Last Time, the Spice Girls, David Bowie, Wham!, Madonna, Beyoncé, Kylie Minogue, Sophie Ellis Bextor and Robbie Williams. The show closed with Shakira, as her track Hips Don't Lie featuring Wyclef Jean climbed back up to number one on the UK Singles Chart earlier in the day. The show ended with Sir Jimmy turning the lights off in the empty studio. Fearne Cotton, who was the current presenter was unavailable to co-host for the final edition due to her filming of ITV1's Love Island in Fiji but kicked off the show with a quick introduction recorded on location, saying "It's still number one, it's Top Of The Pops". BARB reported the final show's viewing figures as 3.98 million.

Other answers have already said it is Sir. Jimmy Savile O.B.E.
( This is the correct spelling of his name, it has one `L` not two)Jim is about 80 years old now, yet last year he ran the London Marathon! He has run so many I`ve lost count .From the late fifties and especially the sixties Jim was a phenomenon, he was a successful D.J. and radio and T.V. personality he did numerous T.V. and public information adverts, and sporting events ( he was at one time a wrestler) Almost single-handed he was responsible for the sixties "I`m backing Britain" campaign, he was responsible for people wearing Union Jack underpants! He persuaded the public to "buy British", there were thousands of Mini-cars on the roads, and everyone was proud to be British. At one time he had his hair styled in a `long page-boy with a fringe` he parted it in the centre and had one side black and the other white! He wore masses of gold jewellery, rings and bracelets and watches and necklaces; yet he remained the same Jim, that he always was. He has raised un-believable amounts of money for charity, he gave his time as well as his money. Despite his fame, for many many years he worked several days a week in the Stoke Mandeville hospital, for paraplegics, he worked as a porter and must have cheered up so many young accident victims. He is a lovely guy and a very modest one, I am sorry that we do not see very much of him these days, I expect he wants peace and quiet , but we do miss him very much. I wish him good health and happiness and thanks Jim for all the plesure you have given us.
