The first 2 answers are correct. then there is embarrassment. Plus they may have a threat hanging over them. such as I will kill you or your family or both if you leave me. The fact that the police have to catch the person breaking a restraining order does not help. By the time the call for help can be made and the cops arrive the person is either gone or has done whatever damage they came to do.

What is abuse?- In an abusive relationship. The abusive behavior starts out very small, like griping about the house, or not liking certain outfits. It gradually expands to include friends, and family. The fights and hitting are far into the relationship, so the victim is never quite sure when it started. They just gradually realize they're in over their heads, and by then they they they deserve it, or they "asked for it", so they find it impossible to seek help.

Fear! Most abused individuals are afraid that their abusers will come after them or their families if they try to leave. I never really understood this until I watched a special on it. I do know that there are shelters that will give them some protection. Being in an abusive relationship is a terrible and frightening way to live.

People that are in abusive situations are ashamed and scared to tell anyone. They always say that they "LOVE" the abuser and they think that the person will change. In which case the only way for them to get out is to be brave and leave or to end up in a morgue.

an abuser tells the abused it is "their own fault" they are being abused and the abused tends to believe that after awhile, therefore the abused is ashamed and will not tell.....
that is just one reason.
other reasons might be fear of retribution by the abuser, fear of breaking up the family,
fear others wont beleive them....
im sure there are other reasons that can come into play....

sometimes they don't know who they can trust. Sometimes they believe it is their fault, and I suppose they are afraid of what will happen to them when their abuser is confronted by someone else.

because they don't realize it is abuse, or they don't think anyone will believe or help them, or their self esteem is so low that they don't realize just what is happening. there are all sorts of reasons, the biggest one for me was I didn't want people gossiping about me once I told.
