That happens when you are day dreaming.

Sleep is a brain function, eyelids are a reflex function

So the brain has taken control and rested the essential functions but not bothered with the non essential functions like blinking.

Eyes open while sleeping is quite common, it's the blink you don't see that makes you feel as though they are asleep with their eyes open.

Have you sat there for hours watching? Of course not, still, it's nothing to worry about, when the eyeball gets too dry the eye will blink, eventually the reflex muscle (like a cramp but without the pain) will relax and the eyelid will close

They are not asleep but day dreaming.

This has two possible medical problems.

First not closing the eyes will allow them to dry out, suffer infection and with the possibility that in dreaming the retina becomes fixed, damage to the optic nerve. This is why when patients are anaesthetised their eyes are lubricated and taped shut.

Second. If a person daydreams to the point where they appear asleep or unresponsive it indicates that the brain is acting in a totally non-normal manner. This suggests that different areas of the brain are in use or normal brain function is impaired. Whilst this may not be a problem at present if drugs are used, excess alcohol taken, or a head injury sustained then serious problems may arise.

Can you see a picture in your imagination?

Can you open your eyes & still see the picture?

Falling asleep with opened eyes is like that; the focus is still gone from the outside world even though the eyes are still open. Eyes open or closed, it's the mind that changes & the reticular activating system (RAS) in the brain that is involved in falling asleep, not only how much light is coming into the eyes.

Great question!
