the role depends upon the outcomes sought. For an ultraconservative, elitst favouring social outcome; the media is method of control. In today's west (in the financial sense, rather any political or geographical sense of the grouping) that is the section of the world's populations under the jurisdiction, if not the tutelage of the WTO and the IMF.
(our side)
the media is the ultimate means of sedation. when a population is controlled it will sense an inherent wrongness. and act -out in violent fashion (the russian purges, siberian camps, work programs), and (nazi extermination). the difference now is that our directs us to realm of the other we aspire to. Our way into this other is through purchasing (food, clothes, car , phone, magazine, cool identity). these thing all cost the traded coin. and the traded coin eventually can be translated into the base worker's hour. The media makes us believe our place in the machine is allwecould ever want.
