Everyone is planning for his or her future, except that some people's ways of planning their future are less constructive than what many of us expect them they should be to make us competitive in this society or market place. If one doesn't plan for his future, which is also like living his life without goals that we believe are necessary to help us survive financially and socially, he is not naive. A fair judgment to this kind of person will be that he thinks differently and plans for his future in a way that he thinks suits him best. A passive, less ambitious person who fears challenges and hides from life crisis shouldn't be called naive. Instead this person is someone who generates his or her intelligence on a different level.

I guess that would depend. Some people legitimately don't believe there is a future--strange as that may sound. So for them it's a very logical calculated act and therefor--not naive.

For people that are just denying that actions need to be taken, I'm not sure if "naive" is the right word, more short sighted, etc.

Naive to me connotes "innocence" and I'm not sure that denying the future is that.

Interesting question though.

When you are young, you almost never think about 20-30 years in the future. I think it's naive and I wish I'd have listened.

Start an IRA now, or buy CD's (not the music kind)

I guess it could be, but that is improper use of the word. Naive is someone who believes a guy when he says he loves her when he's obviously just trying to get in her pants.
