Why does there seem to be such a tight supply of Playstation 3's...Every year someone comes out with a hot video system..Wouldnt these big companies be smart and have an ample supply ready for the holidays?

They want to cater to the rich people and wannabees that wish that they could work for a game developer. I've seen everything from PS1 to now, and it's predictable marketing strategy. They have millions more stored away and will see how the first couple hundred thousand makes the public drool.

I played games on a PS3 development kit at work (EA Sports) over a year ago and was impressed with it. Only thing is that it did not look anything like the final release. Looked like a tan PC tower with a PSP hanging out for a controller. Graphics were cool and game play fantastic, even for beta games. I got my PS3 free from my landlord who works for Sony in Foster City, CA three days ago and am impressed! It's a great investment!

First you would want to address is that there were technical delays and they were able to guarantee 400,000 at todays launch date and 100,000 per week for the remainder of the year. One of the reasons they fell short was the code development.

You could also compare this to the WII coming out, they will only have 1 million in the market on Sunday.

It basically comes down to supply and demand, people who would like to purchase a PS3 and they put out an enough for everyone to purchase people might just put it in the back of their minds that they can always get one later. The lack of supply pushes people to purchase for the now factor since not everyone could have it. Status symbol of actually owning a $600 gaming system also comes into play.

The most popular answer on this one would be supply and demand. I would also think that some folks would enjoy the challenge of trying to get one as well. Would I like one? Yes! Would I camp out at Best Buy trying to get on the lottery to get one? No. I know there will be enough after the new year that the antics people do and the hoops they jump through are crazy.

Congrats to whomever was able to purchase one today, do the smart thing and put it on ebay and get $2,000 for it and buy another after the holidays.

Seriously, don't know exactly.
But it has always been the rule of Supply and Demand. Look at all the rush around it, and of course the less of them around the more expensive it'll be.
And besides it all works as additional advertisement. Every day I read about lines waiting for PS 3 everywhere and of course followed by how cool it is.
Seriously, I don't know, but it all looks like goldrush. Everyone wants it, so climb the highest ice mountain to see if it's around :)
