The advantages would be: They let you read CD's

The Disadvantage is: They don't write CD's, or read or write DVD's

Advantages: Faster than a floppy, most common for software, play music cds.

Disadvantages: Can't burn CDs, can't read DVDs, slowly being phased out in favor of DVD-Rom/Burner which can read/write/play anything a CD-Rom/Burner does.
