i think schools are encouraged to get pupils to play team sports as this helps them get on with one another and build better relationships for the future.
i don't think they HAVE to do any particular sport just what they feel like and also what the teachers are good at!

schools encourage their students to participate in a wide range od sports from team games to individual sports. if you are lucky you can go to a school that does out of the ordinary sports such as rock climbing, karate and even roller dance

Depends on the school... the size, the community support for athletics. My son's high school is about 2400 kids and they have many many sports teams and an Athletic Booster Club to support them. These are the sports offered that I can think of at the moment:
Basketball (girls and boys)
Football
Volleyball (girls and boys)
Lacrosse (girls and boys)
Water Polo (girls and boys)
Swimming (girls and boys)
Soccer (girls and boys)
Tennis (girls and boys)
Golf (girls and boys)
Cross Country (girls and boys)
Track and Field (girls and boys)
Surf (girls and boys)
Baseball
Softball

My son's school offers cricket, tag rugby, tennis, football, netball, hockey - and some others. And it's not a private school.
