We are attuned & conditioned to act a certain way on the society which would have nothing to do with what one wants to really do. For Ex: When you have lost a dear one, you stand brave & accept everyone's condolescenses & convey your gratitude coz your are taught to do that. You would at that time wish they would all disappear & you give you some privacy.

"Conventionalized behaviour" is acting according to accepted norms or ways, the way that a person who is quite concerned what others think would act.
Desire would be acting on one's own emotions without worrying much what others thought.
So this means that sometimes people choose, in order to be accepted by others, to act in a way that others accept rather than the way that they feel, and after many repetitions of this, it becomes their nature
to act as they believe is acceptable, and seldom act on their feelings. At that point the conventional behaviour is their identity. Identity is who a person considers themselves to be, and a character is a real or fictional person in a literary work.

Hi there :-)
I agree with danm... It's when someone behaves according to the society's stereotypes. Lets say for example that someone goes for an interview; instead of giving genuine personal answers and acting as it is as an individual, answering questions by copying all the 'cool' tips and hints from the net.. have you done it?

to desire is to dream for something badly, conventinalize comes from convent which is a place for a religious sake.so it means being contented or being satisfied is much better than being desirous..it gives you a clear identity of being a real person.so maybe the speaker says that he wud rather be contented than to desire something which he cannot have..hope you got it

It means that sometimes people act how society says they are "supposed" to, rather than doing what they really want.

This character is one who does what he is "supposed" to do
rather than what he really wants to do. It is this conformity
which becomes his trademark rather than his inner desires.
