3-4 days without a bowel movement is normal, so you need to relax. Your doctor should have told you to relax too, not told you to switch formula.
The only way to diagnose constipation in a baby is a stool sample so unless he goes and it is hard, or a doctor takes a sample then you don't really know.
Is his belly hard or tender?
Honestly if he isn't about 10x fussier than normal can you just leave him alone? He will poop when he needs to. He is probably just going through a growth spurt so he is using almost all of his food so there is nothing to poop out. (After all there is no undigestable fibre in an all liquid diet)

Our daughter would only have bowel movements every 3-5 days until she started on solid foods. When she did go, it was like clay and very painful for her. We spoke to the doctor and were told to try apple juice (did nothing), prune juice (did nothing) and, finally, to try infant suppositories. The suppositories worked wonders! We were told to slice them in half, long ways and use them sparingly (only when she seemed to be in distress). When she would get backed up, we would use them and she would go immediately (I would have time to get her diaper on and she would start straining).
If your son is struggling, call your pediatrician and ask about the glycerin suppositories. There are some with some sort of medication in them (laxative, I think), but we didn't use those. They are very inexpensive. We would buy them at Walmart for less than $1.50 (in the pharmacy section, make sure you get the infant's/children's "Fleet" brand).
If you go with the suppositories, just a few things we learned when I would use them with our daughter... I would prop her up on a pillow. This served three purposes, one was to let gravity do it's work, one was to make her more comfortable, and the last was so that she wouldn't feel any resistance when trying to go. Also, I would stay with her the entire time. It sometimes took a while and she would usually be in a fair bit of discomfort until she was done going. I would stay with her, talking to her quietly and holding her hands. She seemed to have an easier time of it when I was with her.
These will most likely work. IF THEY DON'T... call your doctor back and demand that they see the baby.
Good luck and I hope your little boy feels better soon.

Try a warm bath, fill it up so it covers his belly. The warm water may help relax him and his muscles down there. Afterwards, exercise his legs like he's bicycling. This movement also helps to move it out. You could lift them up and down a few times too. If you are really desperate, you could put some vaseline or ad on a thermamoter and very very careful, put it in his bottom
a few times. It stimulates them down there and they naturally start to push. Some drs don't agree with this because you want to be CAREFUL that you don't cause any fusions down there. But the nurses at my dr swear by it and it does work, every time for my kids. Also, I don't know if apple juice really helps with the bms. I thought apples were part of the BRAT diet that you eat when you've got tummy issues. (bananas, rice, apples, toast) I thought they were suppose to help you keep things in. I'm not sure. Also, if you have started solids with him, stay away from bananas, apples, squash. They are more binding than pears, peaches, prunes, sweet potatoes, green beans, and peas. At least until he goes. AFter that, mix a binding food with a non binding one. Helps keep things going. Good luck!

I think 4-6 BM's is a little much....I would call the Pediatrician and go over the baby's diet and see what has changed. If the baby has too many BM's in a day, the nutrients are not getting absorbed in the food and can lead to malnutrician...and a 5 month old will get into serious trouble before you notice it.

Is your baby on soy formula. If he is then is might be the problem. Have you tried feeding your baby food pears? One other thing that helps my son to go before he started solids was to lighten up his formula for one bottle a day only. This formula your son is on might have too much iron in it. You might talk to your doctor about a low iron formula and see if this helps. If I can help you with anything feel free to email me.

BOTH OF MY KIDS HAD BOWEL TROUBLE AS INFANTS. MY PEDIATRICAN TOLD ME TO TAKE A TINY SLIVER OF REGULAR BAR BATH SOAP AND STICK IT UP THE REAR END, IT IS VERY FAST ACTING. IT WORKS JUST LIKE A SUPPOSITORY. IT WILL NOT HURT YOUR SON. AFTER CHANGING FORMULAS MY DR. AND I FINALLY DECIDED IT WAS TIME FOR A PRESCRIPTION CALLED MIRALAX. IT IS A STOOL SOFTENER THAT GETS MIXED WITH THEIR FORMULA. NO TASTE TO IT. GOOD LUCK!!

Okay you know that little thing you use to clean out their noses with?
The liitle bulb thing I forget what they are called. Anyhow get a small bowl or even a cup of warm soapy bubbles water, suck some of that up and insert in his bottom not alot. give it about 5 minutes and get ready for a blow out but he will feel so much better. Its an old wives tale my grandmother told me about it. It works. Good Luck
