I have a 1992 Corolla and what has been said is true, but on mine I have to press the O/D button to turn it on and off. Mine is located on the gear shift. If you cruise at higher speeds (>55) you prabably need to make sure that light is off becaue you will rev higher and burn up more gasoline. Maybe since yours is newer than mine it may come on and off automaticly. If that light stays on, you probably need to turn it on manually.

It potential that your overdrive has been became off. which potential you pushed that button on your kit shift. O/D is straight away enabled on Toyotas, so so you might push the button to instruct it off. Overdrive = better gas mileage once you're no longer shifting a lot.

I am a toyota tech. the o/d stands for over drive. it allows the transmission to not go into overdrive. there is really no need to ever turn the overdrive off, it will kill your gas mileage.

On the gear shifter, there is a button. It engages the O/D or disengages it. It's used in Mountainous areas for increased power. On level roads you should have the O/D engaged.

Larry's answer is excellent, but a bit more detail,, when lit, it locks out your top gear,, fourth or fifth depending on the transmission, used on the highway (off) for hill climbing and faster response to acceleration. I use mine (off) to speed up or go up long grades (hills) without loosing speed.
