"Technology" is the use of new tools and techniques to satisfy people's needs.

The benefit (and really the only purpose) of technology is that it enhances productivity in the economy -- ie, allows existing resources to better satisfy people's wants and needs (whether that is a corporation buying technology to produce more goods, or a kid buying a video game for entertainment, it'll all about reorganizing resources to better serve needs).

The disadvantages are that technology often has unintended consequences and can be misused by people (such as food production technologies leading to us getting fatter, or terrorists hijacking airplanes to blow up buildings).
