If you are adding RAM that is one thing. If a Laptop needs much more -- forget it. It will be too expensive. Most every component in a laptop is more expensive. If you are on a budget, put the money into a desktop or save for an inexpensive new laptop... You will be much better off. Laptops also do not have the life of a desktop -- rebuilding a laptop is not the best use of money (besides adding RAM to a good one)

Rebuild the hardware or the software?

Usually, the hardware only goes together in one configuration, and that's the correct one.
There's no reason why the sofware should be any different to a desktop.

go to the manufacturers website and get the service manual. I know dell has them posted, not sure about others, I rebuilt my nephew's dell after he fried the motherboard with soda pop.

got all the parts I needed from ebay. the whole project cost me 75 bucks.

re-building a laptop is usually very very expensive. But if you can find a stockist or maybe through e-bay you might find the parts you need. Obviously do check the manual to see what is compatible and what is not??

rebuild?? Do you mean re-install or take apart?

Don't take a laptop apart unless you're replacing something, they're not good for upgrading.
