you MUST have an insert inside the plastic pipe when connecting to compression fittings. They are available in plastic or copper. I prefer the copper as they are a thinner insert and therefore reduce the flow less than the thicker plastic ones.

Not sure what Thomas S is on about, but brass is certainly NOT an illegal material.
The answers about using a pipe support are all correct but there is one thing that has been overlooked. If it has been dripping and you have tried to tighten it, you may have crushed the olive. Now, the more you try to tighten it, the worse it will become. You will need to remove the old olive and may possibly have to renew that last bit of pipe as well.

Make sure your using connections designed to be used with the plastic pipe. A slight size difference is the difference between leaks and a tight installation. And don't use any teflon tape with them, it only mucks things up.

I'm no expert but i think olive joints are only designed to be used with copper pipes and are fidly to get to seal at the best of times i think you need a different type of joint ask at you DIY shop

Sounds like you have not used a support sleeve??!!

Paul - you can use compression fittings with plastic pipe, but a support sleeve is essential, as it is with 'push fittings'.

Get a stainless steel flexible pipe and new fitting. The old brass types are illegal anymore.

try pipe dope you paint it on, but you have to let it set up before putting pressure to it.
