Actually what you are saying makes perfect sense to me. Because I am gay bloke and I could not understand why someone who grew up fancying men, would find camp men behaving like women attractive! But you will be surprised, there is scientific explanation behind all this.
Let me explain. There are several theories as to why a person is 'born' gay/lesbian. The most prominent I have read is a work by Simon Le Vay. He determined - through autopsy - that gay men and straight men have one single difference: the size of their hypothalamus (a gland in the middle of your brain and well known to be the source of sexual stimulation in human beings). With gay men it is small and fluffy were as in straight men, it is solid and large. He repeated this experiment with lesbian and straight women and found the reverse. Straight women had small/fluffy gland were as lesbian has large/denser gland.
So hypothalamus size wise:
Gay men = Straight women
Lesbian women = Straight men
Following years of studies, he determined that this gland is developed before birth. When he examined pregnant mothers during period of pregnancy he found that this gland gets developed during the 6th month of pregnancy. If the mother body thinks she has a daughter, she would give Oestrogen (female hormone). If she thinks she has male son, she would give Testosterone (male hormone). For some un-explained reason, the mother would make a switch in the hormones. Depending on how long this hormone is given, the child may come up as Bisexual, straight acting gay guy , camp gay guy, or in extreme cases transsexual (a person who believes he is in the wrong body!). So in the case of lesbians, girls who get too much testestorne are born with very masculine features and feel more comfortable in masculine cloths. The extreme cases of Testosterone would mean they feel trapped in wrong body- what you would call transsexual. And if you are wandering how a bisexual man/woman hypothalamus would look, well it is medium size/denisty, they got mix of hormones and thus they would like both!
Hope this helps.

I'm 50/50 and I admit, I like to be able to tell a person's gender on the first try. I for one always look feminine--I have long hair, I like flowery perfume, I think I look better in skirts than pants, I always carry a purse, and I show off my C-cups. Sometimes I get that look like I'm in the wrong damn place, too.
That said, butch women don't look like men once you get those clothes off, and to some people, that thought is very appealing. Most days, my wife can't leave the house without red lipstick and Chanel No. 5. But I love those occasions when she gets into what she calls a "Radclyffe Hall" mood and puts on a pantsuit and mens' cologne, nicely complemented by her shaved head. She's so little and pretty, she can never look entirely mannish, and the contrast is really rather...interesting.
Oooh, is it warm in here?
Anyway, it's not most gay women, or most of the time. It certainly isn't here in NYC! Even if it is in your neck of the woods, they're still women. You and your girlfriend apparently like something different, so isn't it a good thing you found each other? Be happy about that, and let others do what they need to find what and who they want. I think of clothes and hairstyles as mating plumage for humans. The butch women in your area are trying to attract the women who'll respond to it, not the gay men, and not you or your girlfriend. And that's okay.

You have an extremely limited experience in reality.
Women, regardless of sexual orientation can look and dress like men. Heck most women in general wear today what was originally concidered to be "male only" apparell. Your jeans!
Short hair is no more a distiniction of sexual orientation than what color car a person drives or what state they live in.
From my personal experience I'd have to say the ratio of "butch" to "Femme" is more or less equal.
You just need to get out more.

I think you are over generalizing, it's been my experience that gay women are individuals like anyone else, and each dresses according to her own preferences. I've known a lot of straight women who match your description, and a lot of gay women who don't. Maybe you just aren't hanging out in the right clubs, or maybe you are just falsely assuming the the really femme gay women must be straight, as I've seen happen many times, to their annoyance.

MOST is the the wrong word there girlie. Some, yes...but most...you can not generalize like that.
Now...I disagree with you..but I'll do my best to answer.
ANSWER: Because they are human beings and prefer to dress and act how they EACH, as individuals feel comfortable.
Personally..with the constant battles that so many gay and lesbian people face from the straight community, it always baffles me when someone who should understand can be so harsh in judgment themselves... I suppose we all have our questions... =)
I wish you the best~enjoy your partner, and life! :)

Many years ago lesbians dressed like other women then they started dressing like men because of the work they did-easier to work in a war time factory in pants (WW1&2). The war ended but the pants stayed on to discourage the advances of men.
When I came out (43yrs. ago) there was no doubt as to Femmes, butches and dykes. It was just the way it was at that time and to this day many women still carry on that dress code for it suits them.
Personility- I went through the butch to dyke to butch to soft butch to just me and I now dress conservative when dressing up-but those jeans and tees/sweat shirts are always at hand for the dirty jobs.
Hope that answers your question.

I don't suppose that you've considered exactly where it is that you are going? The patrons are probably quite influenced by the "type" of club you are in(much as how many gay men go to "leather" bars, some go to upscale bars, others head off to "drag" bars, and so on), as compared to a general consensus on "most lesbians dress like _______".

Gay women have different styles just like stright women.
I would guess that maybe you are going to the "wrong type" of gay clubs, some are more "butch" then others.
