The original Tobe Hooper movie is very LOOSELY based on the Ed Gein story, from Plainfield, Wisconsin. Jamie Gumb was also based on Eddie Gein, as was Norman Bates in "Psycho".

Ed Gein was a weird bachelor who helped folks and made a little money doing odd jobs in the 50s. He lived on an isolated farm with his sick mother. Once she died, Eddie began indulging his fantasies, preserved his mothers old room just as it was the day she died, and then, in an effort to replace his dead mother, killed a few matrons around town. He dragged them back to the farm and gutted them, using various body parts as kitchen implements (skulls for bowls, etc). It was said he was making a "mother" suit to wear so he could be both himself and his dead mother. The sloppy murder of a female storeowner in town led local police to the Gein farm where they found the storeowner hung upside down and gutted like a deer. Upon further investigation, so many body parts were discovered around the farm, they surmised Eddie had been robbing graves of their bodies for years. to bring home and "experiment on".

Gein was found insane and served 20 odd years in mental institutions until being released in the 80s and dying not long after. His farm was burned to the ground after a failed attempt to auction off some of Eddie's belongings.

The original "Psycho" was more closely based on Eddie's life than was TCM. TCM is all about cannibalism, no cannibalism was reported at Gein's house. The bodies Gein dug up were generally too decomposed to make meals from.A VERY good movie regarding Eddie Gein's life is a movie called "Deranged". While still fictionalized, the movie is the closest thing to the Ed Gein story you probably ever see.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was inspired by serial killer Ed Gein. Ed Gein never used a chainsaw in any of his murders. Toby Hooper got the idea one day from being in a crowed hardware store and he happened to be in the chainsaw department. He was thinking of a way out and thats how he got the idea of using a chainsaw to kill people. The leatherface mask was inspired by a halloween party that Toby went to and their he saw a med student wearing what appeared to be another persons face thus giving birth to leatherface. If your have the collectors 2-disc dvd there is a section under which all of this is being described. I hope this helps.

It is based on some actual events but in all movies it was embelished a little. You can read alot about it on www.courttv.com when you get into the site go to search and seach for Texas Chainsaw Masacre. It was actually a very interesting read and had some pictures of the house and other stuff that happened which was not in the story.

The movie is based on a true event, but very loosely. The real guy only killed one or two people and didn't do any of the crazy things like wearing other peoples skins.

No, it's not a true story, however it is loosely based upon the true story of seriel killer Ed Gein. Gein was also part of the inspiration for the films Pyscho, Deranged and Silence of the Lambs.
