A book called The Chrysalids by John Wyndham. The story takes place in post-apocalypse rural Labrador, Canada, at an unspecified point in the far future, and evidently a warmer place than it is at present. It's so descriptive and such an orginial idea, the movie would be amazing. As for roles, classic actors like Mel Gibson would be good.
Another book that would be a really good movie is The Giver by Lois Lowry. It is set in a future society which is at first presented as a utopia and gradually appears more and more dystopic. The novel follows a boy named Jonas through the twelfth year of his life. It's one of my favorite books so making a movie from it would be so good! I'm not too sure about actors/actresses tho.

I would love to see some of Anne McCaffrey's books made into to movies--not cartoons--with computer technology now, I think it can be done. If you haven't heard of them, the books are about a planet called Pern which is discovered by space colonists and the dragons which are found, tamed, and mutated so that they can be ridden. There are so many books to this series, it is difficult to choose actors--it would depend on which book was chosen--hopefully, the first of many movies in a series. Now that 'Star Wars' has been completed and the 'Star Trek' series is finished its phenomenal run, I think the movie public needs a new sci-fi fantasy series on the go.

This drives me crazy, because I borrowed the book from the library and can't remember the name of it. I'll post again after I find it.
Anyway, the book is fact-based accounts from survivors of the USS Indianapolis. Fantastic. Tells of how the ship went down, but the majority of the story is what Quint feared most, "waitin for my turn". As for actors, I don't know, since seeing the Perfect Storm, George Clooney comes to mind as the Captain or main character. The book is not written from just one person's experience and what they saw, it was a few men.

I recently read a book called, 'In my skin' by Kate Holden. Its about the life of a well educated woman from upper class background and her decline into the drug world and high class prostitution from her teenage years to her forties. Sounds like its all been done before but the other characters in the book are intriguing.
Cast would be Drew Barrymore for the lead and Vin Diesel for the boyfriend.

The works of a few authors comes to mind. David Eddings and his series entitled the Belgariad, would make an excellent movie. Also, Harry Turtledoves World War series would also make an excellent movie. Not sure about actors, though.
