The gene pool of a species or a population is the complete set of unique alleles that would be found by inspecting the genetic material of every living member of that species or population. A large gene pool indicates extensive genetic diversity, which is associated with robust populations that can survive bouts of intense selection. Meanwhile, low genetic diversity (because of inbreeding and population bottlenecks) can cause reduced fitness and an increased chance of extinction.

Except for identical twins, each individuals DNA is unique (animals and humans and plants). Offspring share a unique combination of their parent's DNA. Thus a population contains a collective "pool" of genes that can be passed on. When conditions such as climate change drastically, some animals may be more prone to die than others and their genes leave the gene pool.

People/living beings with different sets of genes, but belonging to the same species in a given area.
Its believed that in-breeding within a small gene pool leads to various deficiencies in the offspring. Larger the gene pool, better are the chances of having better offspring.

A gene pool is related to the number of individuals in a population that can breed. It is a measure of how many different genes are present.

The term "gene pool" revers to the genetic diversity of the potential mating partners for an organism in a given area.
In onther words, pretend you are a male lion. First ask how many female lions are around. The more potential breeding partners, the "deeper" the gene pool and/or amount of geneitc diversity.

I've heard of it in reference to a person's genetic makeup & I think it refers to the number of people that contribute to the characteristics of that person.
