My daughter wants the set of Lemony Snicket books (A series of unfortunate events) I can get them seperately but it will cost a fortune, was hoping I may be able to get them a little cheaper as a set! Does anyone know where I can get them?

A new full set of the 13 books costs little less than buying the 13 seperately.

Amazon "Marketplace" (which sells new and used books can get you a bargain ... but be careful, their postage costs are higher than the regular Amazon, and you NEVER get free postage no matter how many books you buy or how great the amount you spend. Also, you never get to "see" what the condition of the books is like, and sometimes a purchase can dsappoint.

My advice would be to buy your books at ebay. New full sets are sometimes sold (sometimes still wrapped) and are a fraction of the price they go for even from discounted bookchains like Amazon. But better still, individual copies can go through for very little indeed ... sometimes as little as a few cents/pence per copy plus postage/shipping, (auction lots on quiet days, NOT buy-it-now lots). The good thing about ebay is that you get to see a photo of the books you're buying, so with a little time spent browsing the lots, you know you won't be sent something in poor condition.

Warning: when clicking to buy a copy off ebay ALWAYS check the postage/shipping costs first; some sellers sell books at an intentionally low price and over-inflate the cost of postage/shipping. However, there are plenty of honest sellers too ... and with a little patience you could easily gather a full set of the books at less than half the retail price, (even after you've added in the cost of shipping/postage).

But you'll have to get busy NOW ... Xmas is drawing closer!!!

My final bit of advice would be to ask if you really need to get ALL the books in one go. In my personal opinion, the early books (first 4 or 5) are great, but after that they get a bit samey, and seem to rehash the same plot until late in the series. Even for the most avid of young readers, reading all 13 one after the other will lack the variety of reading books by several authors. I would recommend you buying the first 4 or 5 books only, (you can always buy the rest later), and add in bit of variety including a range of authors like: Jonathan Stroud, Diana Wynne Jones, Panama Oxridge, Louis Sachar and others. Variety is the spice of literature!

Costco has a good price on the set, as well as the individual books, and Target put out compilation books that are VERY reasonably priced. There are 3 books to each volume so you would buy one book containing 1, 2 and 3... then the second book with 4, 5 and 6, etc.

Oh... I should have mentioned... Target and Costco also sell the individual books for a very good price (about $6.50 each in my area.)

Why does she need to get them all at once?

If you get her a few at a time you have her gifts taken care of for Christmas and Birthday for the next couple of years.

Failing that, you could put the word out to family and friends that they are what she wants and they can either collaberate with you to get them or give her book vouchers to get them herself.

If she gets them bit by bit she may appreciate the value of them a little more than if they arrive all at once.

If I was looking to buy them I would look on Amazon under the "new and used" marketplace - there are often new copies available there for much less than market value.

If you want new, you'll probably find the books to be cheaper to buy online than in the high street.

Tesco.com has three different gift packs at about £10 off the recommended retail price & good discounts on individual titles.

You could also try the Book People website - they often sell sets of books at greatly reduced prices.

Hope this helps.

At Sam's Club you might be able to buy them cheaper in sets of three instead of more expensively each one separately. I believe Sam's sells them in sets like 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, etc.
