you are better off with slow release for potted plants.
orchids dont like fertiliser much at all. maybe a teeny bit slow release.

usually early morning or late afternoon . but I'm a bit concerned that you've specifically mentioned orchids because they are a bit touchy when it comes to fertilising -- like you need to water the orchid first because if your mixture of liquid fertiliser is just not right , then you might burn the roots and then only once a fortnight late spring through late summer . but as in your situation (as i read in so many ) you answer blind because i don't know where you live ( i.e state territory , hemisphere even ) not your fault but a lot of questions could be responded to better if the readers knew where you roughly lived , particularly garden questions. anyhow don't take this as a 'nag ' , it's just a general overview that think can be addressed better ; in the meantime good luck with your plants .

I am a early morning gardner....I am talking first light, here. I do all my spraying and plantings early. However, there should be very specific label directions on the fertilizer you plan to use.

I have been gardening for so long and best time is right after the sunset.Enough light for you to see what you are doing and enough time for the plant to consume what you give to it before the sun effects the leafs.
