Water is water....most of the time we use water to dilute something else. So, I don't think that water can be diluted. Oh yes, it also depends on what type of water are you talking about. If it is normal water from the tap, you can dilute it using distilled water...make sense.

You might have thought this a silly question but if you add water to another liquid it mixes with, such as ethanol (methylated spirits is an impure form) you would have a solution of water IN alcohol. So to dilute this solution you would add more alcohol. You could do the same with acetone and several other liquids.

Water is most often the dilution medium. can water ever be in a homogeneous solution with these other two substances? Naturally--NO. However, there are a lot of oil and water homogeneous solutions that can be achieved by forcing all the particles through a tiny screen that makes the particles mix. This is, the principle behind Homogenization.

To dilute means to reduce in thickness or density. While the thickness of water can not be reduced, the density can by adding oil, since oil is less dense than water. To prove this, pour oil and water in a glass and see which one comes to the top.
The water and oil mixture must be heated to boiling in order to get the two to mix.

Just about anything you add to water will decrease the concentration of the water, and make it a mixed solution. For example, sugar, salt, juices.
