decimals sort of work the opposite way from number on the leeft side of the decimal point - the zeroes count only when they are between your number and the decimal.
Just as 1 or 10 could also be called 00000001 or 000000010, all these extra zeroes are unnecessary; they don't change the meaning and can only add to confusion.
likewise, zeroes after a declimal are pointless: 0.5 is the same as 0.50 or 0.5000; two times 0.5 is not 0.10, it is 1 (or 1.0, if you prefer)
if it's easier, think of it in coinage: $6.5 is six dollars and 50 cents. $6.10 is six dollars and a dime, which is not the same as $7.

Six and a half miles and 6.5 miles mean exactly the same thing but expressed differently. 6.1 miles means 6 and one tenth miles. 6.25 = 6 1/4
6.5= 6 1/2, 6.75= 6 3/4.

First off, you really need to think about the rationality of any celestial object (especially a planet) being 34 miles from Earth... The Moon is about 230,000 miles from earth. The Earth's atmosphere extends about 100 miles from the surface of the Earth... So, Mars would be in Earth's atmosphere at 34 miles... Anyway, the whole thing is based on the fact that Mars makes its closest approach to Earth EVERY year (time of year depends on the relationship of Earth's orbit to Mars' orbit)... About 34-40 million miles depending... You can see Mars in the night sky throughout most of the fall... it appears as a bright reddish "star" due to the Sun's light reflecting off of its reddish soil. Always question things that seem to make no sense... which is I guess what you are doing on here... So, good for you. You have a leg up on most that just blindly believe ridiculous theories like this and the Moon hoax...

yes, it is six and a half miles. 6.1 miles means 6 miles & 1/10th of a mile long. imagine a mile is divided into 10. 1 part is equivalent to 1/10 or .1 mile. 3 parts is 3/10th or .3 miles.

6.10 means 6 and one tenth mile. Trailing zeros have no value but they are use in the science world to tell you to what level of accuracy a number is.
Therefore 6.10 has the same value as 6.100 or 6.10000 etc.

6.5 is 6 and a half.
You wouldnt put 6.10 at all. 6.10 would be six miles + a 10th of a mile!
