I have read you can't tell their sex until they are about 3 years old. I want a male and a female,,can someone help me?

You can't sex them, and even if you can, buying a male and a female doesn't mean you will necessarily end up with a compatible pair, and more likely you'll end up with lots of fighting on your hands.

To achieve a compatible pair, purchase 4-6 juveniles and grow them out. From these the chances are a male and a female will form a pair, at which point the remaining fish should be removed.

Till they are about three ,,,there is no way that I know of...I dont think that even they can tell the difference till they mature.
