Say a friend or acquantance is telling a guy something, for example maybe a close relative of hers is having major surgery in a few days.

What should the guy do in assisting her? Me personally, I offer sympathy and a shoulder. Sometimes I ask questions, about the topic, that sort of thing. What are your opinions (women only thanks).

I've been through a lot of surgery. The best thing that you can do is exactly what you said you'd do. Be there for her. It means more than you know. If she doesn't want to talk about it, it's likely she is very afraid so go gently on the questions. Also find out all the positive outcomes of the surgery and reassure her that it will be okay. I think it's really sweet that you want to get advice about how to help her. You sound like a really special guy. Wish you both well.

Bring a fruit basket and say 'I'll be there for you, whenever you need me. Just give me a call anytime anywhere."

Encourage them to talk about their fear, it will releave them.
Just be there and listen, say "everything will be alright".
