I think they are catching up.
Certainly the Aussies & All Blacks are very good at most sports they take seriously.
Since England won the Rugby World Cup, the standard in the Northern Hemisphere has risen & the New Zealenders have had to raise their game again.
I still reckon that the next World Cup in France will be a cracker & it won't be a certainty that the All Blacks will win. Sadly England are miles away from being a force this time.
Cricket - England hold the ashes! Maybe not for long but there are signs that Englands cricketers could be good in 2007/08.
The world will catch up with the Aussies & All Blacks who incidentally aren't winning too much at tennis these days?

Taken on average, even though the English did win the Rugby world cup and won back the ashes, the Australian and NZ's do have the edge, even as an Englishman I am not that blinkered not to see that.
From talking to a colleague who is from NZ it is obvious as to why. Their culture is built around sport and competition in sport, their schools and universities are highly subsidised to do this and I see this as a great thing. There is no better way to ensure the generation growing up is fit and active than generating a society that accepts competition and sport and enjoys it from a young age.
In the UK there seems to be a growing theory that competition is bad for little jonny and amy .... daft. Life is one great competition and being active as opposed to lazy and expecting life to give you everything rather than working for it is crazy and a dangerous step to take.
So ... to catch up those in power need to look at this model and think long and hard about their policies.

Any lead that can be built up can be eroded.
You may not have noticed, but England currently hold both the Rugby World Cup and the Ashes - so both dominant teams have shown cracks in the recent past. Australia's cricket team is ageing, and there is no guarantee that the players coming through will be of the quality of the outgoing team, many of whom are or were in the "all-time great" category.

Has it come down to black and white - there are several part aboriginals and one part Indian in the Australian Cricket Team/s. As a matter of fact they had a team only made up of Australian Aboriginals. Matthew Hayden is very involved in training the Aboriginal community boys interested in playing the game - however, alot of them are more interested in all forms of football and Boxing and well known for their prowess in those sports. If I remember well there was even a part Indonesian boy playing some years ago. The field hockey team at one time had several part Indians or Anglo Indians in it as well.

Instead of signing Aussies and Kiwis that are coming to the end of thier career the world should look at bringing through their talented youth. Simple. Once every team is full of their own countrymen they will begin to catch up.
