In primitive societies where people live very close with their livestock there is often "cross-suckling" going on. I saw some film about a semi-nomadic african tribe where the women breastfed a child on one breast and a baby goat on the other. Obviously it wouldn't take too big a leap of the imagination to taste cow's milk, once they had been semi-domesticated and were close at hand, especially given the huge volume of milk they produce. Some other african tribes (the masai? I forget) drink cow's blood from cuts too - the idea of getting nourishment from animal liquids (where the animal doesn't have to be killed and can be re-used) must be pretty ancient.

It goes back to the days of the cavemen. One day, while trying to prove who was the bravest, one caveman, named Seal, made the following statement.
"Do you guys see that animal over there? And do you those things hanging underneath that animal? Well, I'm going to chase down that animal, wrestle it to the ground, and pull on one of the things. And whatever comes out, I'm drinking it."
He did it, and was immediately recognized as the bravest of all the cavemen. After that, any caveman who wished to prove his bravery had to pass the "Seal Test".

Totally guessing here:
Don't know who the person was, but maybe someone saw a calf gettin' some and figured, "Well the wife's dry, might as well see what Bessie's got..."
