do a search on ebay for either model. i wouldn't go to dellauction.com with that budget. first of all they come with blank hard drives, so your looking at least 100 bucks after you buy it to install windows.
Also With that budget, i think those models may be priced above that. i recommend a Dell C610. it's a nice machine and you can find them on ebay in that price range. (i'm using one now) most of the guys selling them on ebay are selling them with windows 2000 installed. Not XP, but it will get you by until you can get the cash for the upgrade.

I found this fo you on eBay, not bad for $200:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DELL-INSPIRON-INTERNET-READY-LAPTOP-BUY-NOW-FREE-SHIP_W0QQitemZ190052485659QQihZ009QQcategoryZ140080QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

You wont get a fantastic machine for that kind of money but without knowing what you need it for it's difficult to recommend anything. Perhaps ask again and state what you will use it for.

The above machine will be enough for writing word/excel docs, surfing the net and will take a wireless PCMIA card which you could add for that spare $50. Anything more modern, and playing encoded videos etc may make it struggle.

Hope that helps

god forget dell...the service stinks badly...if you ever get a passoword issue and your not the EXACT owner of record with the EXACT address on file they have they could care less. many of the parts are dell specific only and none of it is vista compatible....ABSOLUTE GARBAGE.
