I realise only Australia and England compete in the Ashes and all the cricket nations, even the minnows have a chance to participate in the WC, but the Ashes is the oldest trophy in world sport, so how do people outside Australia and England view this fantastic rivalry? I know some of the players from India and Windies have said they still think it is more important than WC even though they can't play. But what about fans from other countries??

In response to "indian b", actually it is number 1 vs number 2 on the ICC test table at the moment! Whilst winning the Ashes won't quite win the test champioship for England it will take them within 2 points. You should check your facts. England are not half way down the table, as you claim. This is how they stand atm:
1 Australia 130
2 England 119
3 Pakistan 112
4 India 111
5 Sri Lanka 103
6 South Africa 94
7 New Zealand 92
8 West Indies 72
9 Zimbabwe 28
10 Bangladesh 2

As far as test cricket goes the ashes is the most famous and possibly important series on earth

But for ODI (one day internationals for those who don't fully understand cricket) the world cup always has and always will be the holy grail

While the Ashes series are played between England and Australia, World Cup is being played by all countries approved by ICC for ODI. Ashes will only determine the supremacy between England and Australia whereas the World Cup will decide the supremacy in the world.

"Ashes being more important than WC "- My foot !
Ashes symbolise the punctured British Pride. They are currently among the lower half of the rankings table.
Ashes does not produce any great cricketing contest either. The subcontinent teams alongwith australia and South africa are the top cri.nations. This hype is reqd to prop up the image of cricket in England where they are trying resurrect the game after it was dead.Perhaps Australians attach importance to this ,since they want to prove a point to their erstwhile masters and get one-up!
For fans in subcontinent, it is just a bi-lateral series between Eng and Aus. Period.

The WC is having its own kind of thing in it... but when comparing with Ashes Indo-Pak match is better to watch... its having fire in that.. aus and england had their link so ashes found.. but indo-pak is having their own wars and matches in-between them also.. so i think it is better than all...
