Cold - Cameron Highlands
Beaches - Pulau Perhentian off Terengganu,
- Pulau Pangkor (a bit expensive)
- If u are a drinker, get your *** down to Pulau Langkawi (duty free)
Otherwise dump yourself at the beaches of Penang, food is great, beaches are nice and people are friendly

Forget about 'very cold place', none in Malaysia.

Better go to one of the islands there. I suggest:
- Pulau Tioman
- Pulau Perhentian

You can go to Tioman from Johor Bahru, I think they have bus services to Mersing jetty, then you can catch a boat to go to Tioman. Stay at ABC village, very nice kampong atmosphere. Nice chalets, and reaosnable (50 RM and up).

Pulau Perhentian is further. You have to catch bus all the way to northern malaysia, near kota bahru. You might want to catch air asia, cheap flight to kota bahru, then catch a taxi to the jetty, and then the boat to Perhentian.

Perhentian has nice crytal clear blue water, white sand beach. Some good snorkelling too. Tioman has a nice relaxed atmosphere, cheap beer, which is a plus :-). Btw, no alcohol is legally allowed in Perhentian since it is an officially Muslim state. But you can still get some for tourists, quite expensive. You can stay in reasonable chalet for 50-60 ringgit at Perhentian island.

I suggest at least 3 or 4 days at both islands to soak in the atmosphere.
Enjoy!

Do something a bit different and go to Kuching in Malaysian Borneo. Silk Air flies there twice a week and Malaysian Air also flies twice a week and the cost is fairly economical.

Go and stay in Fairview with Eric and go to Semmengoh Orang-utan sanctuary and Bako National Park.

Have fun!

since you are from Singapore, the so called cold place are quite far away, nearest to you is Gunung Ledang but no accommodation up there except camping.

Further up north are Genting n Cameron Highland n Fraser Hill. Genting is artificial but lots of funs with theme park n hotels are cheap too if you happen to book on-line during promotion [about RM50 /room /nite], but food would be quite costly.

Cameron[more natural] would be nicer where hotel/chalet could be about RM80 but foods are aplenty yet cheaper, but you should avoid week-end n school/public holidays because of the crowd. But unfortunately now is raining season hence not advisable to go there[landslide might happen going up-hill].

Fraser Hill suit those natural lover [especially bird watching]with less development, lodging are similar to Cameron but cheap foods are lacking there, more privacy location though.

Beaches : nearest to you has to be Desaru but not as good as those beautiful islands such as Tioman, Rawa, Tinggi, Sibu, Aur, Permanggil etc. For you, Tioman should be the better choice with numerous accommodation[with basic facilities eg. washroom/toilet n fan] from RM50 onward, air-con chalet cost almost double, foods are cheap too. Ferry ride from mainland[Mersing]might be expensive to you, something like RM35 per person one way so if you go there make sure you stay long enough to soak in all the sun n sea n wonderful marine life ! Again this is not the time to visit east coast of Malaysia as year end monsoon approaching. But you can try Pangkor or Langkawi Island which are on the west coast, distance wise Pangkor is about 450 km n Langkawi double, from Singapore. Both are cheap[food n lodging] n worth visiting.

one should spent least on room/hotel/chalet in budget type holiday like yours, simply because 2/3 of the time you are out side having funs as the room is just to keep your belonging[not valueble items], take bath then rest for may be less than 8 hours a day !

Wow, i can go on n on telling you about Malaysia but really you need some good planning on your budgeted holidays, may be find out more from website[www.island.com.my or www.tourism malaysia.com.my] n let me know your specified destination so that i can assist you better in term of details info ! Good luck !
