Are our "gray" elders benefiting from our scientific findings in socialPatient care or Only from the Science of Drugs and their effects on their physical health alone. Medical advances in theraputic treatments of diseases is unchallenged and draws every person to a debate . we all love to attach bodies that refuses to legitimise a certain drug that would have found to be beneficial to the patients . We are even prepared to get court mandates against the prescribers or anyone that prevents us access to it . The Media is quick to form clips and documentary films to a-mass public support .Now what of Social Science findings and their relationship to health why are they not a point to rally behind change ? Why do we agree to visible social and mental neglect patients with dementia are subjected to ?
Can we agree to a day of -Wake up,get dressed, lay tables, eat, sit and play puzzle , eat and sleep.Staff are task orientated and inspectors measure tasks outcomes only no Social interaction

The jargon of Care standards measurements of minimum expected care in dementia care is absolute and not in relation to advances in scientific findings .What are they measuring in relationship to dementia care ? Is it appropriate ? Are there Tools to measure social care outcomes in relationship to dementia care ? I put it across to you that a lot of time is spent trying to establish meaningful communication with people with dementia and certain skills are needed . Is time spent with them to achieve this need . What do staff value most changing or empting of commodes or sitting and talking to the clients .Is there a tool that measures Social interactions and if yes is it in use ?

=yes there are boards of competency that oversee hospitals, nursing homes etc. unfortunately they are all "papered up" and put on a show for best behavior. I know this from experience. If you can possible keep a loved one at home, that is the safest and most loving environmentt they can be in..

It's all about money. True person centred care as you call it is not economically viable to the shareholders of the pharmaceutical companies. And it's not just old people that suffer.

And you really want to sort out your punctuation. They are 'grey' elders btw, you only use the double ones if quoting ;-)

National Care standard 12 of the care standards for care homes for older people.shows the minimum standard of care in relation to social, cultural and religious beleif or faith that individuals can expect from their care provider. Care standard 17 is similar. If care homes are not working to these standards then they can be reported to the care commision

In general, no - they don't.

I know one person who works for one and experiences herself as the only person there who bothers to talk to the patients. She has the love and patience and the non-judgment (empathy & UPR to you, pal).

Why do we agree to it? Partly because the measurable has been elevated to godlike status (c.f. the clamour for "evidence based parctice" in NHS counselling); partly because the patients have no voice; partly because most people, even the relatives, don't really know waht goes on behind the closed doors of the "care" homes; and partly because we are a person-centred smallish minority in a non-person-centred society.
