I feel sad that one of the world's greatest ever players is no longer with us. Not many players can claim to have played for the best team in the world, but Puskas played for three such teams (Honved, Hungary and Real Madrid) than had no equals at that particlar time. And Puskas was outstanding for all those teams.

Anyone who has ever watched the video to the 1953 game when Hungary demolished England 6-3 at Wembley will know what a magnificent player Ferenc Puskas was. That goal where he drags the ball back and leaves the England captain kicking thin air, is classic. Yes he was a brilliant individual talent, with superb control and powerful shot, but I feel it was the way he led his team and brought others into play,as seen in the 90 mins of that game, that made him a much better overall player than a world class individual star such as George Best. I recommend to all football fans to get DVDs of the 1953 'Match of the Century' game at wembley. (If England had not been walloped in that game it would not have led to the tactical revolution in this country in the 1950s and 1960s, and England probably would not have won the 1966 World Cup, so even in England, we should be grateful to him).

Some of the goals Puskas also got for Real Madrid in the finals in the 1960s against Eintract Frankfurt and Benfica were also unbelievable. I'm sure they're on YouTube somewhere.

(On a sidenote, that BBC article does not mention that Puskas was part of Hungary's team that won Olympic gold at the 1952 Olympics when that tournament had a much higher prestige than now.)

He was a great player, who unfortunately could not lead his country to glory, just like George Best. The closest Hungary came to was second in the World Cup.
