Monica on the TV Show Friends -

there was a show when Chandler cleaned the apartment - took everything down to dust and clean the shelves - and then in came Ross (Monica's brother) and he basically said 'good luck' for Monica remember EXACTLY how she placed every single item in her apartment and if anyone moved it, or turned it, or adjusted it - then hell would break loose.

That is anal retentive - cannot think out of the box - a very serious kind of OCD - probably more than OCD

The term anal-retentive (or anally retentive) is essentially a vulgarism. "Retentive" has been added to an original Freudian term "anal," implying that any person so described is so uptight they have difficulty defecating.

My ex husband. He would literally wash dishes before he put them in the dishwasher!! (So the dishwasher wouldn't get dirty he said!) The hoover has to be placed a precise certain way-if I was a millimetre off,all hell would break loose!! Everything had to be just so-and he wanted the flat to always look like a show home-which is completely unattainable when you have a small child!!
The strangest thing about all this extreme tidiness-he doesn't shower and stinks to high heaven!!

I am anal retentive. If i stack things {i.e. books etc.} they have to be stacked neat and straight, if i do flower beds in the garden they have to be straight, i can not stand clutter.

A Freudian term referring to the inability of letting go and owning what is yours and obsessing about it.

For example:

'you eat the M&Ms in color order.
you fold your dirty clothes before putting them in the hamper.
you have to have all boxes in the kitchen facing the same way and in order by size.
you have all your canned goods organized by type, flavor, and use.
and they're all facing the front.
all you books, CDs, and movies have to be alphabetical order. '
