The trouble with most modern carpets is that they are 4 meters wide. If your room is 3 meters by 5 meters you have to buy a carpet 4 meters by 5 1/4 meters. So a room that is only 15 square meters needs 21 square meters of carpet. The fitter will let you keep the waste.

If you measure four panels that will give you 4x4=16 rectangle
the remaining panels will make two perfectly symmetrically shaped triangles each measuring half of the rectangle area 8 meters and that gives you the total of 16 for the two triangles .

You add that to the area of the 4x4 rectangle and the total area you want is 16+16=32

You have six equalateral triangles with 4 meter sides.
You can work the area out neatly as each traingle will have an area of 4*2 = 8.
Six traingles 8*6 = 48.
