I'm looking less for religious answers than experiential ones (e.g., the thought of not being able to breath; where I'm going to go; being alone).

I like the answers so far. As I said before, not looking specifically for religious interpretations, though some spirituality has been mentioned.
Perhaps another aspect of this issue would be the question 'What is it that comforts you when thinking of your own mortality?'
"It's not that I'm afraid of death. I just don't want to be there when it happens." ~Woody Allen
"Some men achieve immortality through their work, some through their children. I prefer to achieve immortality through not dying." ~W.A.
Also, at what age did you actually begin to recognize your own mortality?

Answers #9 and #11 are somewhat similar in that they deal with children. I always thought that if I had a wife and children, I'd be less concerned with my own death, since there would then be lives close to me that I considered more important than my own.
Very interesting, and I'm guessing #11's fear isn't for herself, but rather for her children, as was #9's.
Thanks.

No, I am not afraid to die, but afraid of the outcome to those that I leave behind. Mainly, my son. He is only 10 and this is what scares me - I have done my will, chatted with my ex-husband - did all the financials 'just in case' - but that is nothing compared to how HE will deal with it.
That scares me... so what I have been doing since I became pregnant with him - and continued even after he was born was write a journal that I have put away in a safe place (safety deposit box) that is meant for him to read.... this way he will always remember me and not just the 'good times' but the arguments, the discipline, the crying, the times when one of his pets passed away - all and everything has been written in the journal.
I know I will go to a good place, for when my mother passed away - she was 'in and out' and very often felt peace at times - and though sad, it helped me deal with her passing. I also am sure that you will never be alone in the afterlife... but again, all comes back to my son and how he will deal with me, if I ever leave too early. You just never know.

No. I seriously believe that this world is a mess and death would enable me to bid goodbye to it. Since you are not interested in religious interpretations, I will not elaborate on this belief.
But I do say - the GREATEST thing that a man can learn in this life is to ACCEPT DEATH GRACEFULLY.

Since I have had children I am terrrified of dying. I am so scared of what will happen to them if something happens to me. My youngest son has a disability so I am also concerned about what will become of him after I am gone. Before I had children, my mortality scarcely crossed my mind, but now I have panic attacks because of it.

never precisely thought of it, but it strikes me only real hard whenever i actually see someone not alive. I have tried to imagine so otherwise, but i am not able to. i tried so that it might put other things in my life in proper perspective, as to if i can see myself dead, i might know what is probably my purpose on this earth. or it would help me to "begin with the end in mind"
Religiously speaking, probably life does exist after death, probably souls do exist. i am thinking my answer is not along the lines that you are looking for, but maybe if you choose to respond it might help me in some way. Thanks.
