That answer should be in continental drift,and also when Pangaea broke up into the seven continents that your now use to.As South America was attach to Africa and Australia was apart of Antarctica and on and on.

maybe because originally, all the continents form a larger continent that broader at its north side

This is bcoz the ocean puts pressure in their southern side & also australia dosen't tapers off in dh south
