With a loom.
They made the threads 1st, using animal hair such as lamb's wool or Angora or Alpaca ~ or vegetable fiber from cotton or hemp.
Those fibers were pulled through comb-like tools then spun on spinning wheels to make thread, yarn, string.
Looms could be very simple, hanging types or more elaborate constructed table types.

they spun wool then they knit that thread together then they went through the brutal process of felting it. people spent hours with their hands in ice cold water stretching and beating the knit material into cloth. The felting process tightens up the cloth. Once you have cloth then you can cut it and sew it together to make clothes.

people ended up with terrible deformities from having their hands in that cold water all day.

in the old days, they make clothes by getting it from the plants/animals and using it by the woods and by their hands(just like the machines)...

Not necessiarily an answer - the other responsers did that. But, I wanted to share a memory you brought up for me.

My mother had a bedspread that a great great great of hers made.

That in itself is not big feat - BUT she actually GREW the cotton, SPUN the material, MADE the bedspread - talk about homemade!

The bedspread is still actually in rather good condition. My sister now has it. The date (of completion) is made into the spread - July 4, 1876.

Thanks for taking me back to that memory - I enjoyed the trip.

You would have to grow the cotton, spin it into threads then weave it into material. Then cut it and hand sew it...lots of work. ...most med evil folks only had one change of clothes.

...you can see why!

They spun the wool and wove it with a manual loom.
