And here I mean an acquaintance, a friend, workmates, etc. Is it some verbal or behavioral "slip" that people inadvertently make, or what?

Many people will say mannerism and body movement and other stereotypical stuff like that. From experience, I've learned that it depends on how, (say, a guy) acts. It doesn't matter if he has a wife or a girlfriend, if the guy say, constantly talks about penis's, fallic symbols, or complains or makes jokes about who might be gay, if basically gay sh*t is usually on his mind in conversations, he might be gay or bi or curious. Why else would the stuff always be on his mind. That is his TRUE action. Especially of the same type of guy physically goofs around with other guys who tend to be attractive. It may seem harmless, but picture him doing the exact same physical behavior with a chick, and somehow it will look like he's flirting. The fact that they are guys he does that to is no difference.
These are my suspicions if someone is gay.

I* can tell a guy is gay by the waY he moves his hands, drinks from a cup, interests, walk and general interests. I have never been wrong, I can not tell about a girl unless she is a real butch

I get a feeling about men with Gay tendencies, something in their manner indicates it, but this is not foolproof, since some men, that walk the walk and talk the talk of gay people, are happily married (to women). but maybe they are "latent" gays.

Mannerisms and the way they talk usually give it away but sometimes straight people act gay but aren't.

Usually mannerisms or body language are a dead give away. The are subconscious.
