For most of labour I was either standing or sitting, I found sitting the best near the end as I really didnt have the energy to stand anymore as I was getting lightheaded, and my husband could massage my lower back that was simply killing me. For the actually delivery, which lasted about 20 minutes, I had leaned back on the hospital bed. They didnt want you to do it any other way. If you're looking for alternative birthing methods, apparently water births are the best way to go. You'd have to research if they offer that in your area or not. You'd be sitting, but the water takes the weight off you so you dont get tired, and so gravity offers its help getting your baby out. I didnt have an epidural, but I think if you do get one your options are more limited in what position you can be in.

With my first, I was in a hospital bed in a semi-setting position. I had a second degree tear with that birth.

With my second, I had a waterbirth with a midwife. This tub was set into the floor of the birth center. I pushed her head out in a squat and then change to hands and knees to get her shoulders out. No perieal damage.

With my third, I was in a supported squat in a birth tub with a midwife. This birth tub was set up in our kitchen. My hubby was actually in the tub and caught the baby. The midwife was outside the tub with her arms under my shoulders, supporting me. Again, no perineal damage.

The third position worked the best, I think. Even though she was the biggest baby, she was the easiest to get out and I was the most comfortable in that position.

My first one was laying down, second and third squatting. Squatting seemed like the most natural position, and I didnt have stitches with those two births(but that could be a coincidence)

you are able to desire to discover a midwife or physician that can help option birthing procedures-- no longer all do. I even have heard that status up or crouching is easier on the mother through fact of gravity and that's how females supply beginning in maximum third international countries. yet you do no longer constantly have the alternative. I even have 3 young infants and had to place down for scientific motives. the main intense element is wholesome mom and toddler. How ever that occurs is the way it is. don't get so hung up on the birthing place or your dream beginning which you forget that. better of success!

in my day, we had no choice but I wouldn't want to be squatting for sure...birthing is a very painful deed and I don't think I had the strength to squat while having a contraction. If you can do it, I applaud you, trying to stay focusing was enough for me...I had NO drugs!
