Try opening a window or a door. It'll be chilly for a minute or two, but it usually works. If not, you may have a nest or sormething blocking the chimney. Good luck

Look inside your fireplace and you'll see a handle, it should be pushed back or a chain pull the chain until the smoke leaves. If the fire is out. Look into the chimney and see if the flu is open, then try the things I just mentioned. Also look up the chimney to see if you can see daylight or use a mirror. If you can't see then call a chimney sweep. Look in the yellow pages. the chimney may need cleaning.
This is a big percentage of house fires, this time of year when it gets cold out. People don't clean there chimneys.

Reach up into the chimney and open the damper in the flue. ( fire has to be out to do this ).
You have to start a draft going to get the smoke up the flue correctly. Open a door or a window just a little to start the draft when you build a fire. A sealed room with a fireplace / woodstove is a bad idea and can kill you.

Make sure you've opened the damper. When was the last time you had it cleaned? Do you have a screen over the opening to keepirds from nesting in the chimney?
If all these are ok, the next time you go to light your fire, take a couple sheets of newspaper and twist into a torch. Light it and hold it in the chimney opening to start the draft upward before you light the fire.

have you had your chimney checked to see if it is plugged birds like to make nest over the summer .also creosote can build up and plug it when it's cold hold a mirror so that you can see up the shaft and find out whats wrong or take off the cap from outside and look down with a flashlight . if pluged you can buy a chimney brush also chech and see if the damper is closed look from the bottom with a flashlight there is a lever to open it with i was thinking of a wood stove not a fire place but also look down the shaft they get pluged also . good luck dale

Theres usually a trap door that you can open or close on the chimeney (from inside the house) so can let smoke go out, or close it when you don't have fire and you dont want cold air coming in. If that doesn't help, maybe the chimeney is plugged up with something. Good luck.
