A friend of mine insists that Tendulkar's first-class batting average is below 10 runs. He's even willing to bet a bit of money on this. Do I take up the challenge?

No offense meant to all others who have answered this question, but your friend is a lot smarter than what you think - or even what many answering colleages of ours think.

YOUR FRIEND IS RIGHT.

There's a small bit of info here:

There is a player called Chandrakanth Tendulkar, who played 5 Ranji trophy matches for Goa in the mid-80s. He scored 90 runs at an average of 9.

No idea if he is in any relation to Sachin.

The point is - there is a Tendulkar who has a first class average below 10. And your friend intends you to trick you here. Of course you can bring out Sachin's average of 59.72 and the bet could go nowhere. But it all depends on the exact words you chose for your claim.

Forget the money, point this fact out to your friend and have a drink together by pooling the money.

And it isn't a nice idea to bet anyway.

No offense but your friend seems really misinformed. See this:

"Domestic career
In 1988/1989, he scored 100 not-out in his first first-class match for Bombay against Gujarat. At 15 years and 232 days he was then the youngest cricketer to score a century on his first-class début.

Sachin Tendulkar is the only player to score a century while making his Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy and Irani Trophy debut"

Now with such and impressive start, I doubt that his avg is 10 lol.
Take the bet and win!
