When my parents were children (early part of 20th century) many families had the custom of putting up the tree on Christmas eve. The children did not take part but were allowed to see the tree either later on Christmas eve or on Christmas morning. So the tree was part of the mystery along with Santa Claus. My father remembered that his earliest trees were lit with candles. The candles were only allowed to burn for a little while each night for the obvious safety reasons. The tree was left up from Christmas eve until 12th night.
I think that the custom of putting the tree up earlier than Christmas eve probably had something to do with electric lights. With them you keep the tree lit for longer each night and for more nights. The tree became an item of holiday decoration rather than the focus of a ritual.

Our family cut a live tree out of the yard about the second weekend in December. It sat in the garage for a day until all the snow melted off. It smelled great!
By the feast of the wise men (or the first weekend in January), it was ready to be dragged out to the snow bank and decorated for the birds and beasties before it dropped any more needles.
The right time is when you feel the spirit of the holidays - for some it is right now - or like my spouse Christmas Day. :)

It depends on if you have a real tree or an artificial one, real trees tend to dry out and become a fire hazard, so I would put it up not much sooner then 10 days before Xmas, I use an artificial and usually put it up the day after thanksgiving, but at my house it comes down the day after Xmas.

It depends on whether it´s a real tree or a fake tree. Fake trees can go up anytime (preferably no sooner than December 1st) but real trees shouldn´t go up before the 15th so that they´ll still be fresh and green by Christmas, not half dead.

I like to buy mine up the day after Thanksgiving. I wake up early and go to the blitz shopping, then I come home get the kids and husband and go get a tree and decorate the house.

We usually get ours from 7 to 10 days into December and have it out by New Year's. Lots of time to appreciate the once a year tradition and just give the presents a chance to grow greatly in numbers. lol
