I believe people explain things to the best of their knowledge, and the people in the past are no different. As a general rule, mythology has some connection to fact - even if it is a very slim link.

Let's take for example the Centaur - a being that has the body of a horse, and the torso of a man where the horses head would be. Now, imagine if you will that you have no concept of saddlery and you see at a distance a man or group of men riding horses. Anyone knows that a well-trained rider on a horse can appear to be fluid, and accomplish some amazing feats, so at a distance it might seem that a four-legged beast with the torso of a man is maneuvering. So the beginnings of a myth are created, and are propagated by the retelling of this tale.

Consider another example - Dragons. While the exact appearance of a dragon varies (Eastern vs Western, wyrms vs serpents), one common detail is large size. Now, despite the reluctance of the current government, it can be agreed that China is the site of amazing fossil remains, as are many other locations all over the world. Imagine that someone was to dig up large petrified bones, but had no concept of 'dinosaurs' or the theory of evolution. A peasant, a magistrate, a knight, a feudal lord - all might surmise that they are the bones of a large animal and where there is one large animal, there are others. Eastern mythology places Dragons as part of the Celestial Order, Western mythology sees them as the test of mettle and chivalric valour. Again, the tale is told to any who will listen and gains some credence in folklore.

Granted, this is supposition on my part, and might be a grand example of pulling together some half-assed truths. Then again, people judge their world by their own experiences and knowledge. It is easy enough for 'errors' in the retelling of tales about foreign creatures or things found to accumulate over time. From here, a fact becomes a tall tale, and over an age become legend and then myth.

Besides - you know how gullible some people are... 8)

It is quite possible that many of the creatures from the various mythologies in the world may have had a basis in fact. (finished laughting yet? Yes? good.) What I mean by this is that they were possibley based on mistaken accounts of actual creatures that over several retellings became the creatures in question.

Then again, they may have actually been real creatures...that have, due to the encroachment of humans...taken their leave of us and found refuge in an a differnt plane of existance...waiting for the gate between those planes ot repoen so that they can return....(pause for laughs)...that's my take on it anyway...personally I'll go with the second choice.

Why not??? If people say its not logical, then they should look at those creatures perspective since they also believe that humans are a myth.
Many people in the world admits that they've seen those creatures. Logically it's very very possible that they exist and maybe they still do it's just that maybe humans now can't see them like humans of the early ages.

that's a possibility that categorical mythological species would have been only worry-free creatures with a deformity. Unicorns would desire to be worry-free goats or perhaps horses with a single horn. there have been documented cases of such creatures. so some distance as winged beings are worried, putting wings on something became a manner of exaltation in the classic international, commencing with the Babylonians. Angels weren't defined as having wings till after the Hebrews have been enslaved in Babylon. Mermaids have been observed for years, and a rather good variety of researchers think of that what all human beings is seeing are matinees As on your blue people who're incredibly much bare in the artic, that's all you suitable there.

Well, there definitely is a concrete difference between myth & fiction. Fiction is totally man-made while myth has some element of reality associated with it. For example: There were huge gigantic birds mentioned in the Arabian nights known as rocs which could carry away 2 huge African elephants with its 2 feet. Now, these birds were mentioned to be in a far away land towards the east. On exploration & digging deep, it was found out that there once existed in Indonesia gigantic birds which could carry a man away with its feet for food. The skeletons & fossils of such birds were found in Indonesian soil.
These ancient birds were not as large as mentioned in the Arabian nights, so probably the ancient Arabian travellers exaggerated the reality. So, in case of myths, legends & folklore, there is some element of reality associated with them.

I think some are closer than some think.

Like is an alien a demon. Are the manifest of man?

You may have heard of golemns in video games etc but these source from early Jewish texts.

Dragons did exist- but they probably never breathed fire.

Very small dragons still do exist, of course. So do giant squids and sea horses. These things are truly amazing.
