I personally believe that works of art provoke feeling in people. An "ordinary object" may not. BUT - an ordinary object to you may seem like the work of art of the century to me!!! And vice-versa.
You have an excellent question here.
But, in general most works of "art" incite glorious wonderous imaginative explorative beautifying and bewildering emotions upon and within the onlooker. It would be many a rare item on this earth not to do that.
I dont think that there are many things on this earth that cannot be described as being a work of art. BUT it is those exceptional pieces that grab the attention of the onlooker that take pride of place and are thus called works of art. Not to mention the appropriate advertising of such items/word of mouth, and good luck in being discovered!!!

A work of art as defined by Aristotle is a joy forever and it is the same that John Keats says in his poem Endymion. A work of art or a thing of beauty is a joy forever. A work art when expressed truly shall become immortal. It's as simple that the great works of Shakespeare we read still, though he passed away about 500some years ago. The paintings of Michael Angelo, Da Vinci, Raphael--they are all works of art and truly immortal. As Shakespeare sang 'So long as men can breathe or eyes can see'
So long shall live the work of art.
an ordinary object--It is just the part of dying time. Have significance at the present passing time only. Shall not be there in memory and hence no life.

There is no difference. Every particle on this planet is a work of art. The only thing that distinguishes plain objects from art is the eye of the beholder.

As we all know, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder", and this makes the study of art very subjective. One man's trash is another man's treasure, so to speak. But the experience of recognizing art is similar, even if the objects are not.
Art is created with the sole purpose of creating beauty. Its form IS its function. There is a touch of the infinite in a true work of art, something unexplainable, something breathtaking, something holy. It possesses absolute singularity - utterly unique and isolated; a word never before spoken. Art brings in to our world a hint of the eternal and perfect; it shines through in the work of illuminated hands and eyes and lets us get a glimpse of the Greater.
This, of course, has only been my experience!

Art is different to everyone... hence the saying beauty is in the eye of the beholder, art is the same way. Sometimes junk seems like junk to you but others might consider it art..

The difference is the value attached to it by the human psyche. Oh and the price tag also.
