i have never used PIC, but one disadvantage is you are locked into using only PIC. I have always used micro's that are based on the intel instruction set, and with that, you have a variety of manufacturers you can use, like philips, atmel, cygnal, etc..

PIC is a family of RISC microcontrollers made by microchip technology....derived from the PIC1650 originally developed by General Instrument's Microelectronics Division....
PIC is an acronym for "Peripheral Interface Controller"....
The PIC micro-controllers are designed as fast i/o controllers for 16 bit microprocessors....
