I bought a belkin wireless router 802.11g. I set up everything and i realized my connection was being stolen because there is no way my cable modem can be this slow. I never knew how to set up a WEP key and the manual never had a step for it. Now I am letting people take my connection so if anyone can help me that would be great. thanks!

Don't use WEP. WEP is old stuff and can be hacked into many sites on the internet have tools for hacking into WEP and many tech sites don't recommend using it. Also would need to know more information on how to tell you do set this up. I would asume you are using Windows XP (as you have to set up the computer side as well). In addition different routers use different menus, so knowing the exact model would help someone answer your question such that you can have it work for you.

What you want to do is use WPA, much more secure. In addition, running it without the protection is not a good idea as you have found out. Reason why the companies leave it open as default is to make installation easier. Why I have no clue.

I have not in any respect used the Belkin Routers even though it will be similar. once you log into the router there could be some ideas for encryption. WEP is between the weakest criteria and could be crack in spite of the actual shown actuality that probable not through your neighbor. attempt WPA/PSK its somewhat better. Or WPA2. once you opt for both selection it is going to prompt you for you new Key. Make it complicated.

I'm not positive on how to do it with brand of router, but with Linksys you can go to their website and download software to secure the network. If you can't find this software there's usually a number you can call, and they'll send you a link. The software is very simple and easy to use.
